The Gate to Nature

Hailar and Manzhouli, the two major cities on the grand grassland, open the gate to sublime natural beauty and fascinating folktale.

Hulun Lake

A long, long time ago there lived a couple of lovers on the grassland. The girl was called Hu Lun (Hulun). The boy was called Bei Er (Buir). One day a demon chief called Mang Gusi abducted Hu Lun and dried up the grassland .The grass withered and yellowed and domestic animals died one after another. In order to save the grassland and Hu Lun, Bei Er traveled a great distance on foot ,chasing after Mang Gasi day and night. Finally, he fainted from exhaustion. In his weakened state, he dreamt that the demon chief had magically turned Hu Lun into a flower. He immediately watered the flower and broke the spell .Hu Lun changed back into her former self. But the demon chief would not give up. He seized Hu Lun and took her away again .Hu Lun racked her brain for a way to escape. She succeeded in getting hold of the magic pearl on the demon chief`s head. On swallowing the pearl Hu Lun turned into a lake. In the meantime Bei Er had killed all of the other demons, but failed to find Hu Lun. Heartbroken, Bei Er jumped in to a lake to kill himself. All of a sudden the earth split open and formed two lakes, the Lun lake and the Bei Er Lake, with the Wilson River closely connecting them. Later, people living on the grassland named it the Hulun Buir Grassland in momory of the couple.

With all the stories, the Hulun Lake, also called the Dalai Lake, ranks among the five largest freshwater lakes of China. It is the largest lake in Inner Mongolian. Situated in the place 45 kilometers east of Manzhouli, the Hulun Buir League, the Hulun Lake is 8 meters deep, covers an area of 2339 sq. kilometers and has a storage capacity of 13,950,000,000 cubic meters.

As it is nice and cool in the area of the Hulun Lake and the landscape is picturesque in summer, this area is an ideal place for spending summer. Observing and appreciating birds and fish here will be a great pleasure for the tourists. Sunbathing, lake sand bathing, fishing on the edge of the lake in a tourist boat, along with other activities, often make the visitors in such a height spirit that they find it hard for them to say "good-bye" to this beautiful place. "The golden fish dinner" is prepared for the visitors on the bank of the lake. Observing how people here catch fish under the ice in winter is another attraction for the visitors.
