The North Tibet Plateau has an average elevation of over 4,000 meters, hence its nickname "Roof of the World". For the local herders, everything in the world has its own soul and story. Here the holy lakes and mountains, complemented by the mysterious stories about them, make the plateau irresistibly attractive.

Of the many sky piercing peals on the North Tibet Plateau, Sangdainkangsang is very famous. As one of the five highest peaks in all of Tibet, the peak is said to be Gangbosangbo, the powerful protector of Buddhist doctrines. lt is held that she created the peaks and lakes surrounding her.

When viewed from the south, Sangdainkangsang resembles a king on his throne; when viewed from the west, the peak looks like a jumping silver lion; from the east, it is a crystal dagoba; and when viewed from the north, the peak impresses viewers as a silver curtain. The peak also changes its dress along with the seasons: it is the color of milk in the summer, silver in the winter, and bright in spring and autumn.

Qiangtang, the meaning of "northern highland", refers to the North Tibetan Plateau. Located among kunlung, Tanggula and Ganddis mountains, its land area covers 2/3 of Tibet. Its total area is over 600 thousand square kilometers averaging about 4000 meters above sea level. It's cold, windy and snowy for 8 or 9 months a year and frozen tundra can be seen everywhere. An old folk song goes like this: "The mysterious Qiangtang, it is so wild and desolate when you are here the first time; it becomes your lovely hometown when you get to know it more."

The north of Qiangtang Plateau is even called "No People Area", thus, the place is the ideal habitat for rare animals, including the north of the Gangdisi Mountains and Nyainqen-tanggula Mountains and the wide area south of Kunlun Mountains. The Qiangtang Grassslands breed thousands of wild animals, and 40 of them are specially protected by the state or regional government. Such rare animals as wild yaks, Bharals, Tibetan wild donkeys, white-lipped deer, etc. are being well preserved in the area. Also it is the best-preserved area for endangered species research which is carried out here.
